Love for reading is one of the most valuable gifts an adult
can give to a child. That’s why I support the Roane Imagination Library. Every
month, Roane Imagination Library mails a free book to every enrolled Roane
County child aged birth to 5 years. In the past 7 years, Roane Imagination
Library has provided over 125,000 books to Roane County children.
The Roane Imagination Library is a joint project of Dolly
Parton’s Imagination Library and the Tennessee Governor’s Books from Birth
Foundation. The project is funded by a mix of state and local funding but
relies heavily on the generosity of corporate and private donors.
As a college librarian, I see Roane Imagination Library
books as an investment in the future literacy of our community. Studies show
that children who read and are read to by their parents are better prepared for
school and perform better on achievement tests. Other studies confirm that
simply having books available in the home is one of the best predictors of
future academic success.
As a father, I can attest to the excitement my daughter
feels when she gets her new book from Dolly.
This week we celebrate TN Imagination Library Week. Help us
celebrate by enrolling your child at
www.roaneimaginationlibrary.org.
Visit the website to learn more about the
Roane Imagination Library and ways you can help us keep this vital program
running. If you have already registered your child, you can help by telling a
neighbor or friend about the Roane Imagination Library or consider making a
donation.
We look forward to many more years of providing strong
foundations for a literate, successful Roane County. We need your help.
